Our troop is very active in service! Service is as big a part of Girl Scouting as fun. Click the links below to read about a few of our projects.

Gift Wrapping for the Mental Health Association

Every year at Christmas time our troop spends an evening wrapping gifts for the Mental Health Association. They have thousands of gifts to wrap for mental health patients in our community. All of us enjoy wrapping the gifts, talking and having fun. When you help out other people it feels good.

Day of Caring

The Day of Caring could not have been better. It is a day when the community gets together and some people do projects for non-profit organizations, some donate blood at the Red Cross Blood Drive and others donate their time in many different ways. Everyone working there was a volunteer. For the last several years our troop helps out with the blood drive by directing people to open chairs, serving refreshments, and babysitting kids while the adults are giving blood. It is very kind hearted of a person to volunteer instead of doing it for pay. Volunteering is a very big part of Girl Scouting and especially our troop.

Adopt a Family

Our troop adopted a family for the second time last Christmas. We took a family with a mother, a son, and a daughter. We went out to different stores and bought different things for the family. We had a dinner and afterwards they opened their presents.

We had a really good time. The best thing is we were helping people. Some of us really didn’t even know it. (I was one of the ones that didn’t!) I think we really enjoyed it.

Garage Sale for University Scholarships

On May 13,2001 our girl scout troop participated in a university garage sale. We had a booth consisting of crafts that we made, small toys, and key chains. We also had a face-painting booth.

We went around to the other vendors to ask if they needed us to get them something from the concession stand since they can’t leave their booths unattended. We carried a menu with us so we could tell them what they had and what the prices were. They would give us the money for the order and then we would go and get what they needed and bring it to them.

Some of the vendors donated money to the troop. We think the best part was seeing the children’s happy faces after we painted a picture or symbol on their cheek.

Keep America Beautiful (KAB Day)

Our troop has participated in KAB Day every year for the last 7 years. We have helped clean roads, cleaned and planted flowers at a school and cleaned the church parking and grass areas where we meet. It is always a fun day! After we pick up the trash we have pizza and sit and talk. One of the most important things that we have learned about KAB Day is the importance of NOT littering!!! It drives me crazy to see people throw trash out their car windows. They have no idea about keeping our country clean and beautiful.

Migrant Ministry

Every summer the church where we have our meetings has a Migrant Ministry. Our community has a large number of migrants every summer for the picking season. Our church provides a food bank, clothing and blankets for them. Our troop helps by working the different areas. Someone checks the family in and collects a list of names and sizes for each person. We have to find the right size clothing for each person in the family and bag it up. It's wonderful that we can help people in need and learn a little Spanish too!
